Today’s world is a noisy one; it is fast-changing and capricious, and prone to polarisation. Yet amid all the commotion, some businesses are going quiet on sustainability – not due to inaction, but rather uncertainty about how to communicate their efforts.
This month, we are excited to share our newest report, The Cost of Silence, which examines the five key headwinds pushing companies to remain silent on sustainability, and the performance costs of keeping quiet. Learn more about the report, including our roadmap for breaking the silence, below.
In addition, we’re proud to announce that Anthesis and Wallbrook, part of Anthesis, have once again been recognised in the 2025 Chambers and Partners Guide. Anthesis is one of only three firms globally to achieve a Band 1 ranking in the ESG Risk category – a testament to our expertise and the impact we’re making with our clients. The Cost of Silence – our latest report on communicating sustainable business impact with confidence – draws on data from over 500 companies across 16 industries.
The results are clear: sustainability – and speaking to it – has a positive effect on commercial performance. In fact, up to 31% of a market leader’s reputation is driven by how they are perceived on sustainability.
So why are 63% of leading companies not communicating on their sustainability initiatives? We found five key headwinds to the silence:
1. Uncertain Context
2. Targeted Backlash
3. Worried Marketers
4. Distracted CEOs
5. Emerging Legislation
Learn more about these headwinds, the cost of letting them drive your decisions, and steps you can take to break the silence in the full report.
The series finale of our Purposing podcast is out now. Host Becky Willan speaks with Arabella Ellis, Founder & Head of Consulting at Gyre, about how individual action can drive organisational impact. Earlier this month, she spoke with Darshna Myronidis, Group Director of Sustainability at Virgin, on uniting purpose and storytelling to advance sustainability.
