CDP: Response Check

17 April 2015

If you’re not already reporting to the CDP, you’re probably thinking about it. You want to show that your company is taking action on climate change, water and forests. You want to make it clear to investors, customers and governments that you are managing sustainability risks and opportunities.

Don’t get left behind

Reporting to the CDP is an obvious place to start. It’s the only global system enabling companies and cities to measure, disclose, manage and share vital environmental information. CDP is now used by companies in 80 countries worldwide, and every year since the program launched in 2003, there has been an increase in investors requesting data through CDP, and in companies reporting to CDP.  Last year, nearly 81% of Global 500 companies responded to the CDP.

We also know from a recent study that preparing for climate change just makes good business sense with S&P 500 firms that are actively preparing for climate change having an 18% higher return on equity and 50% lower volatility of earnings.

Make life easy

So you want to disclose to the CDP, but you’re feeling daunted by the amount of information required. It’s hard enough developing your sustainability strategy, but the burden of reporting is an added challenge. With the disclosure deadline approaching, it’s worth thinking about how to make the process as smooth as possible.

You need an expert pair of eyes and CDP training to quickly identify and highlight areas of priority. You’ll save time and money later on if you can avoid making mistakes that can hinder the completeness of your response. Whether it’s your first time reporting or you’ve been doing it for a while, you’ll want to understand what data is important and make sure you get it right.
