Creating a Sustainability System for SABMiller

31 December 2013

SABMiller is a multinational brewer with operations across the globe. The company’s sustainable development team needed a way to manage and evaluate the performance of breweries around the world.

Anthesis (then trading as M4C) helped SABMiller to specify and implement a sustainable management system for collecting and reporting performance data. The new system had to be tailored to the needs of the business. The Sustainability Assessment Matrix (SAM) is now a flagship system recognised for its innovation by the CBI and Ethical Corporation.

SAM has provided many benefits over and above those identified at the start of the project. These include:

  • Clarity about how the business is performing across a range of priorities
  • An easier way to share results and best practice, building relationships between breweries
  • Identification of areas of risk and excellence, enabling the team to focus on the most material issues
  • A consistent approach to sustainable development across the business
