Collecting Scope 1 and 2 Emissions data

Data collection can be a tedious task, requiring you to navigate through the red tape of your organization, manage and analyze incoming data, as well as translating this data into meaningful information for internal and external stakeholders. With this in mind, Anthesis has created a "Scope 1 & 2: data collection check list" that notes each emissions category, what those specific categories include, and the data required to complete your emissions calculations.

Scope 1 data, especially transport fleet data, can be much more difficult to gather than Scope 2 data. Yet it's important to get this Scope 1 data correct - as it has higher emissions factors and contributes a larger proportion of a company's total emissions (than scope 2 data). This makes it essential for companies to fully understand these emissions, which will allow them to take meaningful actions to decrease Scope 1 outputs, and their overall carbon footprint.

In addition to Scope 1, the amendment to Scope 2 guidance has added a new level of difficulty, as it requests reporters to both account for and report market and location based emissions. This avoids double counting in the marketplace, as well as revealing opportunities for companies to invest in clean energy and/or strategically implement sustainability initiatives in regions with higher emission factors.
