According to a new report published earlier this week, there is up to 50,000 tonnes of food waste in the UK specialist wholesale markets and the cash and carry sector – up to 33,000 tonnes more than earlier estimates. The report is published by WRAP, Food surplus and waste in UK wholesale grocery, 2015, and aims to provide further clarity for food waste across the grocery supply chain.
This new report includes estimates that Anthesis produced for food surplus and waste in the UK wholesale grocery sector, and builds on the work that Anthesis also conducted on grocery supply chain food surplus and waste estimates, published by WRAP in May 2016.
To gather data for this new report, Anthesis surveyed wholesale market organizations and developed a methodology for scaling up the estimates to UK levels. The higher-than-previous estimate reflects better data and a higher degree of separation of food waste from mixed waste streams arising within the sector. The study also included indicative estimates of current redistribution of food surpluses from the wholesale sector and concluded that there was still significant potential to do more.
